Mahesh Damayatha was Born on the 03rd of February 1968 in the racecourse quarters, Nuwara Eliya to parents Mrs. Ellen Peter and Mr. Suduwadayage Peter who was a champion jockey and later a Trainer at the Sri Lanka Turf Club since 1935. It doesn’t come as a surprise that Mahesh Damayatha who started his life surrounded by the neighing of horses has become such an contributor to the horse racing industry. With a role model like his father, that kick started his career as a young boy at the age of 7.
Damayatha has a wide array of knowledge that he acquired working overseas for 18 years where he served as a rider at the Cyprus Race Course (Baulos Karalabo) for 2 years; Baharain Race Course (Kings Stable under British Trainer Pat Rohan) for 2 years; The Dubai Race Course (Jabalali Stable under Trainer Durba Selvartnam) for 8 years; Rali’s Town Stable (under trainer Durba Selvartnam) for 1 and a half years; and the UK Summer Down Stable (under Trainer Hughie Morrison) for 5 years.
As a Jockey, Damayatha won 6 championships at the Sri Lanka Turf Club. In 2018, once he received his Horse Trainer License, he showed his talents and life experience by winning the Governor’s Cup, the RTC Million, the Sports Chief Ministers Trophy and becoming the Champion Trainer of the season! Furthermore, He opened the 2020 season’s first race day with an impressive hat-trick win.
At present he is a Manager and a Thoroughbred Horse Trainer at the Royal Turf Club. His hard work, daily routines, passion and love for the industry shines through his accomplishments and life’s work! Mahesh is the treasure of Edwards Stables.
